"... the original camelback trunks were made in the Kansas City and
St. Louis area. They were sold to the greenhorns crossing the
plains. The trunks were topped with canvas or leather to shed
water... each piece (of wood) is ripped, milled, and planed before
being steamed overnight. Then the pieces that are twisted and bent
to make the hump of the trunk are placed in a jig..."

American trunks were covered with leather canvas and then shellac
to make them waterproof ... " I'm trying to create my own
